Semana Santa officially starts today, Sunday April 13.
But it will be a bit different than previous years.
This year the Dominican Navy has banned all large-scale parties on the beaches.
This measure comes at a time when the country is going through a difficult time due to the nearly 230 deaths due to the Jet Set tragedy.
On March 27, the Joint Task Force announced a ban on mass celebrations, both public and private, on beaches and resorts during Holy Week.
This is a preventive measure to increase public safety and maintain peace in the country's busiest tourist areas.
A letter was subsequently sent to all port commanders in the country, including Caucedo, Santo Domingo, Haina, Puerto Plata, Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Boca Chica, Barahona, Manzanillo, Cabo Rojo and Azua.
In this letter dated April 12 this year, the military agency announced that the installation of stages, tents, sound equipment and disco lights is prohibited in the mentioned coastal areas of the country.
