Yesterday, Tuesday January 21, was a national holiday in the Dominican Republic.
The day of 'Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia or Virgen de la Altagracia'(Our Lady of Altagracia or Virgin of Altagracia), the patroness of the country.
This day is celebrated every year across the country.
But most attention is paid to Higüey, in the province of La Altagracia.
Here is the basilica built in honor of the Virgin of Altagracia.
Every year many believers and devotees flock to this basilica to honor and commemorate the Virgin of Altagracia.
During the Eucharistic celebration in the basilica, Bishop Castro Marte of the Diocese of Our Lady of La Atagracia preached a sermon.
The bishop said the following in this sermon:
The economic and social growth of the Dominican Republic can be compared to an airplane on a long flight.

During this flight, the pilot says: 'Take off your seat belts, the country is moving peacefully.'
Present at the celebration were President Luis Abinader accompanied by his wife, First Lady Raquel Arbaje and the Vice President, President Raquel Peña.
The bishop also asked the authorities for support.
Place restrictions on the hours of sale of alcoholic beverages, including illegal substances, because it is our youth that could be lost.
At the end of his homily, Monsignor Castro Marte expressed his gratitude for the presence of President Luis Abinader and also greeted the presence of the First Lady Raquel Arbaje and the Vice President, Raquel Peña, as well as the civil and military authorities who were present.
