Encuentro Beach came alive the weekend of November 26th -27th as scores of Groms – the surfing expression for young avid surfers – descended for the first Pauhana Grom Surfing Competition.
More than 80 children, ranging in ages from 5 to 15 competed in 10 categories, some from as far away as Bavarro on the South East Coast.
The first day's competition saw superb surfing conditions with wave heights and breaks making for spectacular performances and thrilling a large crowd of spectators.
Crowds cheered as the youngest the 'peewees' fought waves almost as high as themselves.
The young pros rode massive breakers, kicked up by a strong North East breeze.

The second day saw monsoonal downpours with gusting winds lashing the competitors making conditions rough for the finalists.
Despite the poor conditions the competition ended on a high note with all three veteran judges praising the high quality maneuvers of the young surfers and body boarders.
While the contest took weeks to prepare, organizers are contemplating making the event an annual one.
Pauhana Surf Club co-owners Jack Astacio and Chepe Gomez said the idea of a grom surf competition was sparked after the high level of interest created by the summer surf camp organized by Pauhana.
Surfing, they said, was an activity that not only created healthy bodies in young people but a strong and disciplined character.
